[Session 1-6] Prospective of the Processes in the Blue Bio-Economy: Natural, Sustainable, Holistic and Virtual

Abstract

The high potentials of the Blue Bio-Economy have been becoming more and more obvious in the last decade. However, their technical use is in its infancy. As a result, the technical design of the associated processes is a particular challenge. At the same time, there are often unique opportunities to design a future-oriented process that also provides a suitable answer to the great challenge facing humanity. Keeping naturalness of the process and products is without alternatives. Any future-oriented process must inherently implement considerations on sustainability. In this context it must be realized that achieving sustainability as high as possible requires not only to consider the flux of matter, but also the flux of energy and momentum in parallel. When considering bulk processes also the transport, transformation and storage of information is demanding. Last but not least, depending on the product in question any processing method must include the intended protection or deactivation of bioactivity. All these aspects show that a holistic view of all future-oriented processes is essential. Within the increasing information technological possibilities, up-to-date Virtual Engineering of the process and product - including the usage environment in a holistic sense – represents a key tool for modeling, simulation, diagnosis, prediction, control and automation. Examples from current projects are going to be presented.

Introduction of affiliation/ Relation to the Marine Global Project

LSTM Erlangen as well as the twin institute LSTME Busan have a long-standing expertise with the transport, transformation and accumulation of matter of biological origin as well as with the corresponding fluxes of energy, momentum and information on process level. Additionally, automation of food, biotechnological, medicine, pharmacy, energy and environment related processes belong to the core expertise of these twin institutes.
